[Also in Divisions B5 and B8] A carton of thin metal or metal foil and impervious to light is formed by folding, and joining sheet blanks by the use of ultrasonic welding. The sheet metal 20 is fed from a roll 12 to a mandrel 14 where it is cut by scissors 20 to required length. Gripping fingers 38 on feed mechanism carry the metal over mandrels 14, 16 and 18. Rollers 40 press the blank to inverted U-shape and rollers 42 form it into tube shape the edges of which are sealed by ultrasonic welding means 44. The tube is rotated on a mandrel on a rotating head 46 and closed by folding members 48, 50 and another ultrasonic welding device 52. Ridge 56 on plunger 54 then flattens the ridged end produced. The carton is placed on a conveyer and filled from a tap 60 and the other end sealed by members 62, 64 as before. |
