PURPOSE:To prevent agglomeration of fine ZrO2 powder with each other in a process for producing fine ZrO2 powder by a precipitation process and to produce extremely fine and uniform fine modified ZrO2 powder by allowing an appropriate amt. of a lead compd. to coexist with ZrO2 powder. CONSTITUTION:Aq. soln. contg. Zr ions, aq. soln. contg. 0.01-10mol% Pb ions basing on the amt. of said Zr ions, and aq. soln. contg. >= equimolar amt. of ammonia or amines basing on the amt. of said Zr ions and Pb ions, are allowed to contact with each other at the same time or successively to generate a precipi tate. The precipitate is filtered and calcined after it is dried. In this case, an appropriate amt. of fine precipitate (lead hydroxide) is allowed to coexist by allowing the Pb ion-contg. aq. soln. with aq. soln. of ammonia or amines. As the result, almost no agglomeration of fine ZrO2 powder with each other in the filtration, drying, and calcination stages is caused. Thus, extremely fine spherical particles having narrow particle size distribution is obtd. by a simple method securely.
