In the manufacture of chloromethylated aromatic ethers by reacting an aromatic ether with formaldehyde and hydrogen chloride in water, the proportion of water is such as to produce a hydrochloric acid concentration of at least 35%, the proportion of hydrogen chloride is 1-13 mols. per mol. of aromatic ether, the proportion of formaldehyde is 1-10 mols. per mol. of aromatic ether, the reaction temperature is at least 97 DEG C. and the reaction is effected under autogenous pressure in the absence of a Lewis acid type catalyst. Examples are given in which diphenyl oxide is chloromethylated. |
