PURPOSE:To obtain color EL elements with good color tone by changing the areas of color filters or electrodes corresponding to individual picture elements to correct the difference of the strength of each wavelength component of the emission spectrum. CONSTITUTION:In a thin film EL element laminated with the first insulating layer 3a, luminous layer 4, second insulating layer 3b, and upper electrodes 5a-5c on the lower electrode 2 and provided with color filters 7a-7c with multiple colors, the areas of the color filters 7a-7b or the areas of the electrodes 5a-5c for at least one luminescent color are made different from the areas of the color filters 7a-7c or the areas of the electrodes 5a-5c for other luminescent colors. When the luminescent areas of three primary colors are changed to correct the luminance balance of the three primary colors, for example, the color tone of the chromaticity is improved after the luminance is corrected, and the yellow color, blue green color, and white color are correctly displayed, thus allowing the color display with good color tone.
