PURPOSE:To conduct an economical and continuous treatment of filthy water for purification of rivers, by arranging on a riverbed gravel filter tanks in double rows which are automatically switchable alternately and which can perform washing, regeneration and sludge removal by means of water pressure and by passing therethrough already treated sewage or river water. CONSTITUTION:Gravel filter tanks through which treated sewage or river water is passed and purified are arranged in two rows, and automatically interchanged with each other based on rise in the water surface caused due to clogged gravel layer and detected by float switches, whereby the clogged gravel layer can be washed by water jet and sludges can be removed by adjusting water pressure. By using such double row filter tanks on a riverbed or the like in combination with activated sludge treatment method, good water can be obtained continuously and economically to make a river a clear one where fish can live.
