A bearing assembly comprises a self-contained ball bearing unit having an outer bearing ring (10) mounted as a tight fit in a bore (20) in a housing. The outer surface of the outer bearing ring is formed with axial serrations (16) which cut corresponding grooves in the wall of the bore in the housing upon fitting of the bearing unit in the housing. The grooves permit oscillating movement of the bearing unit along the grooves but prevent rotational movement of the outer bearing ring about the axis of the housing bore. The housing bore and the outer bearing ring may be cylindrical and permit axial movement of the bearing unit within the housing, or the housing bore and outer bearing ring may be part-spherical and permit pivotal movement of the bearing unit about a transverse axis. In one construction the serrations are formed only on diametrically opposite portions of the outer surface of the outer bearing ring. <IMAGE> |
