Acidic organic compounds e.g. phenols, or alkyl-, halo-, alkoxy-, nitro-, or amino-substituted phenols, mono- or dicarboxylic acids or amino-carboxylic acids are recovered and/or purified from aqueous or non-aqueous hydrophilic solution by adsorption on a selective adsorbent which is a sulphonated resin prepared by swelling a cross-linked alkenyl aromatic polymer with a chlorinated hydrocarbon, cooling to below room temperature and admixing therewith chlorosulphonic acid in a proportion to sulphonate from 10 to 60% of the aromatic nuclei of the polymer. In an example phenol is adsorbed on the sodium form of a sulphonated styrene-divinyl benzene copolymer. Lists of other suitable acidic compounds are given.ALSO:A process for preparing selective adsorbents for the recovery and/or purification of acidic organic compounds from aqueous or hydrophilic organic solvent solutions, comprises swelling a cross-linked alkenyl aromatic polymer with a chlorinated hydrocarbon, cooling to below room temperature and admixing therewith chlorosulphonic acid in a proportion to sulphonate from 10 to 60% of the aromatic nuclei of the polymer, the mixture then being gradually warmed, e.g. to -20 DEG to 20 DEG C., to carry out the sulphonation. The cross-linked polymer may be prepared from monomers selected from vinyl-benzene, -toluenes, -xylenes, -naphthalenes, -ethylbenzenes, and -chlorobenzenes, a -methyl-styrene, divinyl-benzenes, -toluenes, -naphthalenes, -xylenes, and -ethylbenzenes, diallyl esters and diacrylate esters. Of the chlorinated hydrocarbons specified that preferred is methylene chloride.
