PURPOSE:To decrease the required number of semiconductor lasers, etc., and to miniaturize the size and to reduce cost of a multicolor laser beam printer by providing a rotary polygon mirror which splits a single beam after light quantity control into 1st and 2nd beams and scans them in different directions. CONSTITUTION:The rotary polygon mirror (d) which differ in beam reflection angle between odd-numbered surfaces and even-numbered surfaces is brought under the light quantity control by a light quantity control means (a) and brought under on-off control with image signals VDO1 and VDO2 to split the single beam (c) outputted by a laser light source (b) into the 1st and 2nd beams (e) and (f), which are scanned in different directions. The 1st beam (e) and 2nd beam (f) are scanned alternately by using the light quantity control means (a) and rotary polygon mirror (d) to form 1st and 2nd latent images on a recording medium (g), and the 1st and 2nd latent images are developed in different colors and transferred to a recording material (h) to record a multicolor image. Consequently, only one laser light emission system is required and the size is miniaturized and cost is reduced.
