A spark plug for an internal combustion engine is described, which has two electrodes between which an electrical spark discharge is produced. The spark plug has a spark discharge section which is connected, for example by resistance welding to at least one of the electrodes and is produced from a base metal which contains at least 90 % by weight of chromium (Cr). A voltage reduction section, having a thermal coefficient of expansion which is between that of the electrode and that of the spark discharge section, can be constructed between the electrode and said spark discharge section.
