The control element is a cap (4) consisting of opaque silicone rubber material with a body (5) of light-conducting material which can be fitted into the said cap. To achieve the transparency at the part of the cap inner side (8) lying opposite the cap surface (7), the image (10) of a character or symbol (6) to be depicted is moulded so deeply into the material of the cap (4) that only a thin skin (9) of 0.03 mm remains from the cap surface (7), and the image (10) is filled with a filler (11) of transparent silicone rubber material to stabilise the thin skin (9). This achieves the object of providing an easily legible design which allows characters or symbols to be readily identified both by day and in darkness. <IMAGE>
