PURPOSE:To obtain a small-sized, low-cost, and high-performance multicolor laser beam printer by providing a rotary polygon mirror which varies in scanning angles between two directions and switching the quantity of laser light emitted by one semiconductor laser light source for each optical path identification signal of a horizontal synchronizing signal. CONSTITUTION:The rotary polygon mirror C splits the single beam which is incident from the single laser light emission source (b) into 1st and 2nd beams, which are scanned in different directions. A light quantity control means (a) is connected to the laser light emission source (b) and switches each scanning beam to control the quantity of the 2nd beam with a control value obtained by multiplying the light quantity control value of the 1st beam by a preset integer in synchronism with a horizontal synchronizing signal. A light quantity control means a' is an ND filter arranged in the middle of the optical path of the 1st or 2nd beam. Consequently, the small-sized, low-cost multicolor laser beam printer is obtained which can be applied under any image formation and has high performance.
