PURPOSE:To obtain high-molecular weight polyalkenyl ethers, having a narrow molecular weight distribution and useful as a novel surfactant, etc., in high yield, by polymerizing a specific alkenyl ether in the presence of HI and a metallic halide compound. CONSTITUTION:An alkenyl ether expressed by the formula CHR<1>=CH(OR<2>) (R<1> is H or CH3; R<2> is monofunctional organic group) (e.g. methyl vinyl ether or 2-vinyloxyethylterephthalimide) is polymerized in the presence of HI (hydrogen iodide) and a metallic halide compound expressed by the formula MX2 (M is bivalent metallic ion; X is halogen atom) (e.g. ZnCl2) to afford the aimed polyalkenyl ether having preferably <=1.3 ratio (Mw/Mn). The molar ratio of the above-mentioned HI/MX2 is preferably 50-1 and the molar ratio of alkenyl ether/HI is optimally 1,000-3.
