Oil cooler for an internal combustion engine with a bypass line (7), arranged through the oil cooler, which line connects the inlet side to the outlet side of the cooler (5, 6), and the opening of which on the outlet side is controlled by a valve (8). If the thermostat (4) connects the oil circuit to the oil cooler, in the event of blockage inside the tube bundle, the warm oil builds up on the inlet side (5) and opens the valve (8), which releases the flow of oil through the bypass line. Due to the heat of the oil inside the bypass line, the inside of the oil cooler warms up, so that gradually more and more oil flows through the tube bundle, as a result of which the pressure on the inlet side of the oil cooler is reduced. Once pressure has been reduced, the valve (8) closes and the oil cooler can then assume its normal function. <IMAGE>
