The present invention relates to a method for producing a binding of the kind in which the signatures are joined together by stitching in the vicinity of the back. In accordance with the invention the stitching 3 stops short at a distance 6 from the head and tail of between eight and twelve millimetres and is moreover terminated at both ends by doubling the first and last stitches 4 with a short back stitch. Preferably the collected signatures 1 to be bound are inserted in a strip of cloth 10 and united by means of the stitching 3, the part 12 of the strip of cloth 10 that projects beyond the stitching 3 having paste applied to its outer surfaces which are pasted to the inside surfaces of the cover boards close to and beyond the hinges of the cover. The invention is particularly applicable to the production of a binding for children's books. <IMAGE>
