PURPOSE:To enable a variety of the characteristics of the optical fiber to be examined in a short period and with a good operational efficiency by applying a high pressure to a sample optical fiber under a high temperature and high humidity condition. CONSTITUTION:A sample optical fiber 1 has a length approximately 1km and is formed from a bare optical fiber strand 1a and a coated layer 1b provided thereon. A number of the sample optical fibers 1 are bundled and arranged with water 2 in a closed container 3 via a wire gauze 4. Then, the closed container 3 is heated to evaporate the internal water 2. Therefore, the inside of the closed container 3 is held at a high temperature and a high humidity and, by water vapor, under a high pressure condition. As a result, since moisture is forcibly penetrated into the coated layer 1b of the sample optical fiber 1 and forcibly penetrated between the bare optical fiber strand 1a and the coated layer 1b, the sample optical fiber 1 is deteriorated in a short period. Thus, changes in the transmission property, side pressure property, tensile strength and the like of the sample optical fiber 1 can be examined in a period of the degree of one-tenth of a conventional period.
