PURPOSE:To suppress the temperature drop in a room for which the air is conditioned by the defrosting operation and conduct pleasant air conditioning by starting the room heating operation by an electric heater when continuous defrosting operation is maintained for a time over a specified time and restarting the defrosting operation after this room heating operation is finished. CONSTITUTION:When frost deposit is detected, it is judged whether or not a mask time has elapsed. If the mask time has elapsed, a compressor 1 and outdoor fan 14 are stopped and electric heaters A, B11 and B12 are energized. At this time an indoor fan 13 is in operation so that room heating is effected by the electric heaters A, B11, and B12. The room heating is maintained for 60sec to raise the room temperature. Next, a four-way valve 2 is reversed to make a freezing cycle with hot gas defrosting. After 2sec have passed the operation of the compressor 1 is started and the power to the indoor fan 13 and electric heaters A, B11, B12 is stopped to perform defrosting operation by hot gas. The temperature T of the outdoor side heat exchanger 6 is detected, and when this temperature T becomes equal to or larger than 12 deg.C, the finish of the defrosting is judged and the room heating operation is reopened.
