In a boiler burning solid matter there is provided, for the addition of the fuel, a fuel shaft in which the fuel which is introduced forms a fuel heap. The fuel shaft is bounded at the bottom by a fire grate, adjoined by a combustion chamber with downstream heat exchanger for heating a heat transfer medium. In order to achieve a pre-gasification of the fuel and a reduction of the harmful-substance emission, feed pipes (24, 27, 27') for an oxygen-containing gasification medium open into the fuel shaft (Figure 1 (7)) underneath a drying zone (33) for the fuel. Situated above the fire grate (37) is a support (15) for the fuel heap, having passage openings (16) for combustion gas generated by the introduction of the gasification medium and a partial combustion of the fuel in the shaft, and also for residual fuel and ash.
