In a sorter for coins having a sorting head 56 installed above a rotating elastic disc, the coins are sorted by the cooperation of an inclined edge 112 extending outwards, and of a series of spindles 114a-114f essentially spaced apart externally to this edge. The spacing between the spindles 114a-114f and the inclined edge 112 increases outwards, so that the coins 200, 220, 222, 224, 226 of different diameters are pressed onto the inclined edge 112 by different spindles at different locations. These coins are next captured between the head 56 and the elastic disc, then set into rotation up to outlet locations which are unique for each coin around the outside of the said head. <IMAGE>
