PURPOSE:To obtain the titled novel copolymer, readily recoverable from a reaction system, having high sensitizing effects and useful as a high polymer sensitizer, by copolymerizing a benzophenone group-containing monomer with a specific monomer and reacting the formed copolymer with a specific compound. CONSTITUTION:A monomeric mixture consisting of 2-85mol.% monomer expressed by formula I (R<1>-R<9> are H, 1-4C alkyl, etc.), 98-15mol.% monomer expressed by formula II (X is halogen) and 0-40mol.% monomer other than those expressed by formulas I and II is initially copolymerized using a radical initiator. The resultant copolymer is then reacted with a compound formula III (R<10> and R<12> are 1-4C alkyl, 2-7C aryl, etc.; M is P or N) to afford the aimed copolymer having 2-85mol.% repeating units expressed by formula IV 98-15mol.% repeating units expressed by formula V and 0-40mol.% other repeating units and 0.1-3dl/g reduced viscosity [eta] (measured in DMF at 30 deg.C).
