PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal polymer, consisting of a specific side chain type polymer having groups with aromatic rings, ester bonds and asymmetric carbon atoms in the side chains, capable of exhibiting ferroelectricity within a wide temperature range near ordinary temperature and high responsiveness to electric field and displaying moving images. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal polymer having repeating units consisting of formula I [k is 1-30; R<1> is formula II, III, IV or V (R<2> is COOR<3>, OR<3> or OCOR<3>; R<3> is a group expressed by formula VI); X is halogen; m is 0-5; n is 1-5; C* is asymmetric carbon atom] as a principal component. The above- mentioned polymer is useful in the optoelectronic field, especially electrooptical devices, such as display elements in electronic calculators, clocks, watches, electrooptical shutters or focal length variable lenses, and can also be advantageously used as display elements in wide screens or bent screens.
