A fiber optical connector serves for splicing optical fibers (34, 39) end-to-end in axial alignment. The connector has a housing with a bottom section (10) and three top sections (14, 16, 18), each hingedly attached to the bottom section and latchable thereto. The bottom section has chambers (11, 12) with the V-shaped grooves (20-23) for receiving and properly orienting the optical fibers end-to-end. The top end sections (14, 16) each contain lands or fingers (26, 27) which, when closed, urge the fibers into the correct position within the V-shaped grooves and lock them there by exerting pressure on protective jackets (29, 38) surrounding the cores of the fibers. The center top section (18) has a land or finger (36) which closes directly onto the stripped ends of the optical fibers, forcing correct and precise alignment and locking them in this orientation.
|
