A lead accumulator for fixed or portable use comprises a battery box (1) and lid (2) containing anode and cathode lead grids (5, 6) and, in the form of a sheet (7, Fig. 1), porous fibre mat (9, Fig. 2) powder (12, Fig. 3), or other molded product or as a viscous gel, a copolymer of average molecular weight 5,000 to 50,000 comprising 40 to 90% by weight of ethylene unit and 10 to 60% by weight of at least one comonomer unit selected from (A) an ethylenically unsaturated comonomer unit having an amido group and and an amino group in the molecule thereof and (B) an ethylenically unsaturated comonomer unit having an ester group and an amino group in its molecule. The resin is impregnated by and absorbs the dilute sulfuric acid added as electrolyte (after heating to melt the resin, when a viscous gel is produced), so that the acid does not spill and the battery is more easily handled. The accumulator can be produced easily and at a low cost without limitations of shape and volume and has high reliability of performance.
