PURPOSE:To speedily correct character segmentation by changing combinations of subordinate character patterns by a rerecognition control part if an error in character segmentation occurs at a determination part for a character pattern to be recognized. CONSTITUTION:When a character candidate for recognition obtained by a recognition part is wrong, combinations of subordinate character patterns are changed for rerecognition and the rerecognition control part extracts an object of rerecognition. For the purpose, the rerecognition control part 4 is provided and all combinations of subordinate character patterns included in a character pattern to be recognized corresponding to successive recognition candidate characters selected among recognition candidate characters obtained by a recognition part 6 are transferred to the recognition device 6. Consequently, an operator need not indicate the character pattern to be recognized corresponding to the recognition candidate character and performs operation speedily and accurately.
