PURPOSE:To enable tooth contact and a backlash of a worm against a worm wheel to be odjusted by making housings provided with ball bearings for bearing the worm to be adjusted in their positions with respect to an outer box. CONSTITUTION:Housings 17, 19 provided with ball bearings 8, 9 which bear both ends of a worm 7 are fixed through bolts in a state of being adjustable in their positions with respect to the outer housing 10 of a worm speed reducer. Accordingly, tooth contact and a backlash of the worm 7 against a worm wheel 6 can be adjusted through such a process that the positions of the housings 17, 19 are adjusted in the range of bolt holes 17a, 19a by loosening respective bolts 18, 20. As the result, the worm speed reducer can control the tooth contact and the backlash of the worm 7 without requiring any relatively high accuracy and such a device as the above can be manufactured at a low cost.
