PURPOSE:To obtain efficiently the title resin excellent in heat resistance and mechanical strength, by reacting a specific ethylene/unsaturated carboxylic acid copolymer with a metallic compound of a metal of Group I-III, IV A or VIII of the periodic table. CONSTITUTION:Ethylene (a) and an unsaturated carboxylic acid (b) are copolymerized using a catalyst (c) comprising a Cr compound and an organometallic compound of a metal of Group I-V of the periodic table (e.g., diethylaluminum chloride) in the presence of a Lewis acid (d) such as AlCl3 to obtain an ethylene/unsaturated carboxylic acid copolymer (A). Then, the component (A) or, if desired, the decomposition product obtained by hydrolysis or pyrolysis of the component (A), and a metallic compound (B) of a metal of Group I-III, IV A or VIII of the periodic table (e.g., NaOH) are melted and mixed to crosslink, thereby obtaining the title resin comprising as main components repeating units of formulae I, II (wherein R<1> is H, halogen, 1-20C alkyl, 3-20C cycloalkyl, 6-20C aryl or 7-20C aralkyl) and repeating units of formula III [wherein R<2> is R<1>; and M is a metal ion which composes the component (B)] in which these repeating units are arranged randomly and linearly and the total of the repeating units of formulae II and III is 0.001-45mol.%. |
