PURPOSE:To avoid the unstable traveling by providing the function for varying the car speed according to the between-vehicle distance from a vehicle ahead onto a constant speed controller and cutting off the applied function and performing only the constant speed traveling control when the variation rate of the between-vehicle distance becomes less than a prescribed value. CONSTITUTION:Each signal of a car speed sensor 9 and a variety of switches 6-8, acceleration signal, and a between-vehicle distance signal is input into a cruise controller 5, and adjustment control for an engine throttle valve 11 and shift operation for transmission are performed. The between-vehicle distance from a vehicle ahead is measured, and the control speed in the constant speed traveling control is varied so that the between-vehicle distance value becomes constant. When the distance difference (variation rate) from the aimed between- vehicle distance is below a prescribed value, the between-vehicle distance control is suspended, and the ordinary car speed type constant speed control is performed. Therefore, the deterioration and instability of the traveling state in the case when a constant speed traveling device equipped with the between- vehicle distance control function performs between-vehicle distance control operation can be avoided.
