NOVEL IMIDAZOLE DERIVATIVE

NEW MATERIAL:The imidazole derivative of formula I (R is H or two Rs together form a bond between C atoms; Y is CN, CH3, C2H5, vinyl, phenyl or benzyl). EXAMPLE:1-Benzyl-(2-phenylethyl)imidazole. USE:A medicine. It exhibits excellent gastric inhibitory action and is expected to be useful as an antiulcer agent. PREPARATION:A compound of formula I wherein two Rs together form a bond between C atoms can be produced e.g. by reacting 1-benzyl-2- formylimidazole of formula II with a compound of formula III in a solvent such as benzene in the presence of n-butyllithium. Another compound of formula I wherein R is H is obtained by the catalytic reduction of the above compound of formula I in a solvent such as methanol in the presence of a catalyst such as Pd/C.
