PURPOSE:To remarkably reduce the water content in the org. sludge having a high content of inorg. salts by using a copolymer of a cationic monomer contg. a benzyl group and a nonionic acrylamide monomer in a specified ratio as the dehydrating agent for sludge. CONSTITUTION:A copolymer of the cationic monomer contg. a benzyl group shown by the (a) or (b) in formulas I and the nonionic monomer shown by the (c) and (d) in formulas I is used as the dehydrating agent for sludge. In this case, a/b>=0.25, c/d>=0.25, and (a+b)/(c+d)=20/80-95/50 must be fulfilled. An acroyloxyethyldimethylbenzyl ammonium salt is used as the monomer unit (a), a methacrolyoxyethyldimethylbenzyl ammonium salt is used as (b), N,N'- dimethyl(meth)acrylamide is used as (c), and (meth)acrylamide can be exemplified as (d). The water content in the org. sludge contg. inorg. salts and having a wide range of compositions can be remarkably reduced by using this dehydrating agent.
