PURPOSE:To detect a failure of a mechanical seal in advance or on an early stage by measuring and computing the effective value of high-frequency vibration caused by the mechanical seal with the passage of time to presume damage or leakage on a sliding surface, and judging the normal or abnormal state of the mechanical seal for its monitoring. CONSTITUTION:A rotary machine with a mechanical seal is provided with a high-frequency vibration sensor 1 to amplify its output for its conversion done by an effective value voltmeter 5 into an effective value, which is inputted through a A/D converter 6 into a computing device 7. The maximum value, the minimum one, average one and dispersed one per unit time of the continuously measured effective value are determined, and computed and evaluated according to predetermined algorithm and reference value to judge an operating state such as a failure of a sliding surface and possible leakage. The judgment of stoppage, normality, caution and abnormality, and their data are therefore displayed on a display device 9 and a printer 10, and stored in a memory 11. Thus the failure of the mechanical seal can be detected in advance or at an early stage to exactly and effectively execute maintenance aud inspection.
