A superior hydrocarbon isomerization capacity is achieved with a catalyst composition which contains a metal component from the platinum group and a crystalline mordenite in hydrogen form mixed with a refractory inorganic oxide. The superior capacity is a direct consequence of the fact that the surface area of a catalyst composition is at least 580 m2/g. A new method for production of an isomerization catalyst with a surface area of at least 580 m2/g is presented together with a new process for isomerization of isomerizable hydrocarbons. The main advantage of the new process is the possibility to operate in the presence of sulphur compounds in a quantity corresponding to 5-200 ppm by weight of the hydrocarbon additive, calculated on the basis of elemental sulphur. <IMAGE>
