(IV) (V) (II) (III) (I) in which R1 is alkyl, R2 is alkoxy, R3 is H, or one equivalent of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal ion, and R4 is one equivalent of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal. The process is new and intermediate II is new. If R3 is an alkali or alkaline earth metal it can be converted to hydrogen by acid. The products are known intermediates for herbicides and plant growth regulators.
