PURPOSE:To prevent the reduction of recording quality and the failure of a recording mechanism, by a method wherein, a spool on the ink ribbon supply side is movably held in an ink ribbon carrying force acting direction, and the movement of the supply side spool occurring when an ink ribbon has been all taken up is detected for stopping a recording action. CONSTITUTION:Unless a ribbon 12 is all taken up by a spool 10, a spool 11 and a sprocket 3 rotate to supply the ribbon 12 as much as the taken up amount. If all the ribbon 12 is taken up from the spool 11, the spool 11 moves rightwards due to a drive force T applied through the ribbon. As the spool 11 travels in a direction B, the sprocket 3 moves, and a switch 8 is turned on by an end part of a support plate 4. If the switch 8 is turned on while a recording processing is kept on, a control part 20 immediately stops a motor 24 and stops the action of a recording mechanism 25 containing a recording head 16.
