NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [m is 0 or 1; X is -NH- or -S(O)n (n is 0-2); Y is phenyl or pyridyl]. EXAMPLE:1-Benzyl-2-benzylthiomethylimidazole. USE:A medicine exhibiting excellent gastric inhibitory action and expected to be useful as an antiulcer agent. PREPARATION:A compound of formula I wherein n is 1 and X is -NH- can be produced e.g. by reacting 1-benzyl-formylimidazole of formula II with a compound of formula III (e.g. benzylamine) in a solvent (e.g. methanol) and reducing the resultant compound of formula IV with a reducing agent such as NaBH4.
