PURPOSE:To provide a battery-powered electric-heater type lighter which excels in portability by an arrangement in which the switch can be turned on and off by the sliding movement of a movable part which can be translationally moved relative to the thin casing. CONSTITUTION:A movable part 9 which can be translationally slided relative to the thin casing 2 is made of an electrically conductive material. Since there is a return spring 10 between the movable part 9 and the casing cover 1 or casing proper 2, the movable part 9 and a switch terminal 11 are normally not in contact with each other. When the movable part 9 is pushed in to slide in the casing 2 against the force of the spring 10, the contact takes place between the movable part 9 and the first switch terminal 11. Then, the button opening 5 and the heater opening 7 in the casing cover 1 are aligned with the button opening 6 and the heater opening 8 in the movable part 9 to expose the push button 16 and the heater wire 13. When the push button 16 is pressed, electric current is caused to flow in the closed circuit of a battery 3, and the heater wire 13 becomes red-hot. The thin battery 3, heater wire 13 and switch terminal 11 are disposed not to overlap in plan view to assure the thin structure.
