PURPOSE:To reduce the pumping loss by setting the intake inflow direction to a combustion chamber of a swirl generating passage in the tangential direction for the spherical recessed part at the center part on the piston top surface. CONSTITUTION:A circular recessed part 21 is formed at the center part on the top surface of a piston 1. The piston top surface 1B on the both sides in relation to the direction of arrangement of a cylinder is formed to the surface having the equal inclination to that of the upper wall surface 20 of a combustion chamber 18. A swirl generating passage 9 is branched on the downstream side of an intake passage 2, and the intake inflow direction to the combustion chamber 18 of the swirl generating passage 9 is made same to the tangential direction for the spherical recessed part 21. Therefore, the swirl smoothly intrudes into the recessed part, and the attenuation of the swirl is prevented, and the pumping loss can be reduced.
