PURPOSE:To prevent carbon from adhering to a fuel injection valve, by injecting assist air in no relation to the injection of fuel when an engine is in fuel cut operation. CONSTITUTION:In a control unit 18, an engine is decided for whether it is in a fuel injection operation region or in a deceleration fuel cut operation region by an opening of a throttle valve 8 and an engine speed. The engine, when it is decided to be in the region of deceleration fuel cut operation, stops a fuel injection valve 10 while turns on a solenoid valve 11 injecting assist air from an air assist passage 9 toward the fuel injection valve 10. On the other hand, the engine, when it is decided to be in the region of fuel injection operation, promotes the atomization of fuel by injecting the assist air toward the fuel injection valve 10 by the predetermined timing synchronized with the injection of fuel. In this way, the engine, which injects the assist air even when the engine is in the region of deceleration fuel cut operation, effectively prevents the adherence of carbon to the fuel injection valve 10 caused by a reverse flow of exhaust gas.
