rylsulfonyl-3-heterocyclylureas (I) [R=H, Br, Cl, F, Me, MeO, MeS, F3C, F2CHO; R1R2=atoms required to complete an (un) substd. 6-membered carbocyle or heterocycle contg. O, S, and/or N; R3=H, Me; R4X1=atoms required to complete an (un) substd. pyrimidine, s- triazine, 1,2,4-triazole ring; X=O, S were prepd., and they are useful as broad spectrum selective pre- and past-emergence herbicides. Thus, 2-ClC6H4SO2NHCMe3 was lithiated and cyclocondensated with DMF to give benzisothiazole (II), which was worked up in 8 steps to give benzisothiazolesulfonyl isocyanate(III). This was condensated with 2-amino-4,6-dimethoxypyrimidine to give sulfonylurea(IV).
