PURPOSE:To make it possible to print with a desired density, by supplying heat generating elements of a thermal head with a voltage suitable for a printing density for data. CONSTITUTION:A controlling circuit 12 effects reading of data from an image memory 2 or a text memory 4 according to the kind of data to be printed on a recording paper 9. In this case, the controlling circuit 12 sends a control signal indicating which of image data and text data is to be read, to a voltage- setting part 15. The voltage-setting part 15, upon receiving the control signal from the controlling circuit 12, sets an output voltage of a voltage-supplying part 14 according to the content of the control signal. namely, when the control signal indicates reading of the image data from the image memory 2, the voltage-setting part 15 sets the output voltage of the voltage-supplying part 14 to a value (VL) suitable for a printing density for an image, whereas when the control signal indicates the reading of the text data from the text memory 4, the voltage-setting part 15 sets the output voltage of the voltage-supplying part 14 to a value (VH) suitable for a printed density for a text.
