PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer having slight coloring and excellent heat-resistance and mechanical strength and suitable for heat-resistant parts, precision parts, etc., by reacting a specific dihydric phenol with a dihalogenobenzenoid compound under an inert gas stream. CONSTITUTION:The objective polymer can be produced by dissolving (A) a dihydric phenol of formula I (Y is 1-5C alkylene, etc.; R<1> and R<2> are CH3, etc.; n1 and n2 are 0-4) (e.g. 4,4'-dihydroxybenzophenone) and (B) a dihalogenobenzenoid compound of formula II (X and X' are halogen; Z is CO, etc.; R<3> and R<4> are CH3, etc.; n3 and n4 are 0-4) (e.g. 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone) in an amount of preferably 90-110mol.% based on the component A in (C) e.g. an organic high-polarity inert solvent, adding (D) an alkali metal carbonate (e.g. potassium carbonate) to the solution and reacting the components while passing (E) an oxygen-free inert gas (e.g. nitrogen gas) through the reaction system.
