PURPOSE:To prevent the continuous running of an engine on unreasonably corrected ignition timing by controlling the ignition timing to the predetermined value when an actual engine speed converges to a specific value other than a target idling engine speed. CONSTITUTION:When the predetermined time passes after fulfilling an idling condition, a control unit 16 obtains the average value Na of actual idling speeds during the predetermined past time. And a deviation between the average value Na and a reference idling speed Nb for the preliminarily determined preferable ignition timing is obtained and a difference between the deviation and an actual engine speed Ne is concurrently obtained, thereby giving a reference engine speed Nt. Then, a corrected ignition timing is obtained on the basis of the reference engine speed Nt, referring to a map. As a result, the ignition timing is corrected and the actual engine speed Ne is so controlled as to near the average value Na. Even when the idling engine speed does not converge to a target engine speed, the ignition timing is not maintained in an unreasonably corrected state and a drop in combustion efficiency, fuel consumption deterioration or the like can be prevented.
