PURPOSE:To reduce interruption of the function due to running-out of a developer, by ignoring the recording operation of an inhibiting means based on absence of a selected developer to unconditionally switch the developer to an unselected developer, when absence of the selected developing device or developer is judged and the unselected developer exists. CONSTITUTION:A laser beam printer 1 is provided with a control unit 3 which receives the indicating instruction from a control unit 2 independently provided on the outside to control the operation of the laser beam printer 1. A means which uses another unselected developer instead of the selected developer to unconditionally execute the recording operation in case of absence of the selected developer, is provided. Consequently, the occurrence of function interruption of a device due to running-out of the developer is reduced and many information are outputted. If absence of the developer is detected, the function is interrupted in such state that it can be restarted after developer replenishment. Thus, unnecessary operations due to interruption of the image output indication in an incomplete state is prevented.
