PURPOSE:To improve convenience to use by neglecting a switch operation for projecting a special picture at the time of a picture recording by a VTR. CONSTITUTION:At the time of monitoring a picture recording, when a video signal recorded in the VTR 40 is projected on a sub-screen and the switch for projecting the special picture such as a still picture or a stroboscopic picture on the sub-screen is operated, a system control 90 discriminates whether the VTR 40 is recording the picture or not. According to this discrimination result, when the VTR 40 is recording the picture, the switch operation for projecting the special picture is neglected. Namely, when the switch for the still picture or the stroboscopic picture is depressed, the sub-screen is brought into the still picture or the stroboscopic picture if the VTR 40 is not recording the picture, however, when the VTR 40 is recording the picture, the switch operation is neglected, the contents of the picture recording are projected on the sub-screen and 'during picture recording' is warned. Thereby, a user does not misunderstand by convenience to use is improved.
