To produce casting moulds from foundry sand, filling and compaction are performed at spatially separate stations, the required volume of foundry sand being introduced at the filling station into an auxiliary container closed off at the bottom by the pattern plate and having the same volume as the mould space, after which the auxiliary container is transferred to the moulding station together with the pattern plate and the foundry sand is forced out of the auxiliary container into the mould space by an operation which involves the movement of the pattern plate. In addition to the moulding station with the fixed compaction unit, a moulding installation for carrying out the method has a filling station with a fixed filling container, which is connected to the moulding station via a conveyor, the pattern plate being assigned an auxiliary container which receives the required volume of foundry sand above the pattern plate at the filling station, can be transferred to the moulding station together with the said pattern plate by means of the conveyor and can be lifted into the mould space against the mould box, the foundry sand being displaced during this operation into the mould space. The method and moulding installation allow a 25% increase in output.
