The invention relates to an emergency dumping pit for liquid-cooled, in particular water-cooled, metal-melting units with a pit bottom which is covered by a porous separating layer, in particular a gravel bed, easily penetrable by the coolant, and has a gradient and at least one channel connected to a pump well. In order to preclude as far as possible a hazard to humans and material in the event of an emergency tapping of a metal-melting furnace or of a furnace rupture, it is proposed according to the invention, that the separating layer (3) is arranged to form a cavity (5) at a distance from the pit bottom (2), that the cavity (5) extends over the entire area which can be flooded by the molten metal and/or the coolant in the event of an emergency tapping or rupture of the cooling system, and that the cavity (5) has a venting device (11) which is independent of the separating layer (3). <IMAGE>
