The invention relates to a method for determining water content in liquids based on oil and in similar liquids, in which, without need for a reference liquid and as an essentially continuous operation, the flowing liquid to be analysed is passed through and the light absorption of the liquid serves as a measure of the water content in the liquid. To be able to continuously and automatically determine the water content in these liquids, it is characteristic of the method that the light beams are passed through at least two filter/detector pairs (7, 9 and 8, 10), of which filters the one (7) transmits only one wavelength in a region in which the absorption by water is great and the other (8) transmits only one wavelength in a region in which there is essentially no absorption by water, and are introduced into an apparatus (2) which, on the basis of the relative difference in the light intensities of the beams (11, 12) coming from the filter/detector pairs, determines the water content in the liquid to be analysed. <IMAGE>
