Tool changing and storage unit for machine tools

The flexiblw system for storing tools for more than one machine tool (WM) uses shelves (2) supported above a gangway (5) for personnel. A framework (1) has overhanging supports (6) at a higher level, supporting tool handling devices which convey the tools (W2) to an intermediate station for transfer to a selected machine. The tools are suspended vertically and inserted in open slots in the shelves, by swinging arms (15) below the handling devices, for travelling along guide rails (8) and past the slots in the shelves, and then for transfer to the intermediate stations. Sets of shelves can be arranged in parallel rows also parallel to the rails.
