Sulfonated starch compositions and their use for flocculating mineral waste residues, particularly the red mud from bauxite residues. Use of the modified starch comprises the addition to an alumina liquor from a bauxite process of a flocculating amount of the sulfonated starch which, optionally, may be hydrolyzed, or a sulfonated starch which is also methylated and, optionally, may be hydrolyzed. Preferably, the sulfonated starch compositions are potato and dasheen starch derivatives prepared at temperatures of about 50 DEG to about 150 DEG C and, if further methylated, prepared at about 50 DEG to about 85 DEG C. |
