The crop picked up from the ground is fed via the cross-conveyor 3 and feeder 4 to the tine drum 6, is compacted there in layers by means of the tine spirals 7 in the pressing channel 10 and, after the tripping of the release 20, is fed via the storage zone 17 to the prechamber 19 of the stacking channel 23 by means of the chain conveyor 18. The piston 22 thereupon moves towards the stacking channel 23 and presses the new layer, the layers already located in the stacking channel 23 being transported further against one another. After tying has been carried out, the bale is pushed rearwards by the subsequent layers towards the open side of the stacking channel 23 and, as it runs further, is thrown off onto the ground. <IMAGE>
