For the purpose of two-dimensional measurement of workpieces by means of a single laser beam, a sub-beam is branched off from the laser beam. The two laser beams (14, 20) are moved along scanning lines, which are at right angles to one another, and impinge on the workpiece (32) to be measured. The time intervals in which the workpiece (32) is situated in the beam paths of the two laser beams (14, 20) are measured. The measured time intervals can be used to determine the dimensions of the workpiece along two coordinate axes. <IMAGE>
