In the case of a lathe attachment currently in use, the engaging and disengaging of the tool into and out of the cutting position must be performed by means of a hand lever. However, this calls for greater attention on the part of the lathe operator in order to achieve, for example, a thread termination of satisfactory quality. Only low lathe speeds or cutting rates can be used. In order to increase the working speed and improve the end of the cutting process in terms of quality, a cam is used to disengage and engage the tool, the cam being turned into the positions of disengagement and engagement by a drive and retained there. The novel attachment is suitable particularly for thread cutting.
